Bombs, Boxes, and Back Alleys: The Game of Graffiti in Braamfontein, Johannesburg’s Semiotic Landscape
This chapter examines graffiti in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, as a form of urban play that reconfigures the semiotic landscape through creativity, competition, and embodied interaction. Drawing on play theory and geosemiotics, and informed by ethnographic research with graffiti writers, it argues that graffiti extends beyond territorial inscription to function as a dynamic mode of meaning-making through which writers negotiate identity, power, and urban space. By positioning play as an analytical lens, the chapter demonstrates how graffiti transforms everyday surfaces into sites of semiotic experimentation, challenging conventional understandings of linguistic landscapes and offering new insights into the relationship between language, space, and urban life.
